Half-Life: Alyx is Remo's first Half-Life game as a developer, and it's the first time a team has taken over from Laidlaw, who announced his retirement from Valve in 2016. Remo, a designer and programmer on Alyx, remembers playing the original Half-Life games as a fan Wolpaw helped out on the Half-Life 2 Episodes, but those were still mainly the domain of original series writer Marc Laidlaw (Wolpaw also, of course, wrote for Portal and Left 4 Dead). Wolpaw then came back to Valve as a contractor later that year. Remo and his comrades from Campo Santo-the developers of Firewatch-all joined Valve in 2018, when Alyx was well into production. Wolpaw, who joined Valve as a writer in the mid-2000s, left the company shortly after the earliest VR experiments that led to Half-Life's return got under way. Half-Life: Alyx was in development at Valve for about four years, during which Erik Wolpaw and Chris Remo were only around for about half of the time. It's also the chance for some longtime Valve employees to take on a more significant role in Half-Life. This being Valve's first full-length single-player game in close to a decade, on top of being a Half-Life title, means this is the first time that some relatively recent hires have had a chance to make their mark. The footage only said that the mod will arrive sometime this year, so we still have to wait before receiving a definitive release date.Today marks the release of Half-Life: Alyx, a virtual reality-exclusive title and the series' first installment in over 12 years. She soon climbs up a giant structure and heads inside it before encountering more enemies, at which point the screen fades to show the title.Īll in all, the Half-Life Alyx: Levitation gameplay footage really does feel like that of a modern AAA release, which goes to show how much work went into the mod. Eventually, the action calms down, and she finds a collectible item in an outhouse toilet before solving a quick “thread the needle-esque” hologram puzzle. Even as she fights against other drones and soldiers, she still has to avoid the bullets of this unknown assailant. This immediately brings her into a tense outdoor firefight with drones and heavily-armored soldiers.Īfterward, Alyx finds herself in the crosshairs of an off-screen enemy who relentlessly tries to gun her down. After dispatching a few of these creatures, Alyx obtains a few more supplies and heads through a yellow tube that leads into an elevator. She picks up a few supplies and walks slowly through the hallways, only to find a group of the iconic Headcrab creatures roaming about and taking control of nearby quarantine workers. The demonstration begins with the titular Alyx in a network of dark hallways filled with bloated alien sacs. It appears that the organizers of yesterday’s PC Gaming Show felt especially impressed by Half-Life Alyx: Levitation, as they devoted nearly eight minutes to showing an extended gameplay demonstration of the upcoming mod. This impressive new project adds a four- to five-hour-long campaign to Half-Life: Alyx, and even though it comes with no cost to players who own the base game, it boasts a level of visual fidelity and production value that rivals Valve’s output. Many have already commented on the sheer ambition on display with FMPONE and Corey Laddo’s Half-Life Alyx: Levitation mod.
